Tape manufacture: the process, made simple

Each roll of adhesive tape consists of two main components: the backing material and the adhesive layer that sticks to it. Tape manufacturing is essentially the process of combining the two into the final product, and we all know tape. How does this work?
Step 1: The adhesive. We prepare the adhesive for the coating by mixing it with a solvent that helps transfer it to the backing. The adhesive and solvent used depends on the type of tape we're making: typically, we're talking about rubber resins, hot-melt and acrylic adhesives, as well as acrylic or water-based solvents.
Step 2: Coating. The backing roll is unrolled and prepared for the coating. Again, the backing material depends on the type of tape we are producing. At this point, the adhesive is transferred to the backing in thin, even layers, becoming solid as the solvent evaporates
Step 3: Slitting. After the adhesive has dried, the backing is rewound to form the roll. The roll remains a large, wide tape that summarises several final products: the final step is therefore to slit the cylinder and package the individual tape rolls ready for delivery.

Depending on the product, the rubber resin adhesive can be solvent-free or solvent-based. The paper backing is easy to tear, lightweight and economical. As mentioned above, we produce high temperature masking tapes for the automotive refinishing industry and conventional masking tapes for the paint industry.
